Demonstrators protesting coronavirus restrictions clash with police in Germany
German police fired water cannon at demonstrators who took the streets to protest plans to empower government to enforce restrictions to contain the spread of coronavirus.
Massive protest organized today in Berlin, the capital of Germany, as lawmaker debate a bill that will empower the government to impose curbs on social contact, rules on mask-wearing, drinking alcohol in public, shutting shops and stopping sports events.
The protesters claim that the legislation will endanger citizens’ civil rights without the approval of parliament.
When protesters ignored calls to wear masks and keep distance, police used water cannons in an attempt to end the protest.
Some protesters were detained by German police, local reports said.
The first coronavirus case in Germany was confirmed near Munich, Bavaria on January 27,2019.
The country has so far reported 839,211 cases, 13,303 deaths, and approximately 546,500 recoveries.
