Floods claim at least 194 lives in Kenya

In the last three weeks, floods have killed at least 194 people, displaced 100,000 in Kenya, said Eugene L. Wamalwa, the country’s Cabinet Secretary and Ministry of Devolution and ASALs, in a statement on Wednesday.

“More than 600,000 Kenyans in 122,000 households have been adversely affected by the effects of the ongoing heavy rains, which are expected to continue up to June. Urged for cooperation and partnerships to affected counties to ensure that those at risk are assisted,” he said.

“It is unfortunate that the floods and landslides are being experienced at a time when the country is grappling with the COVID -19. All floods affected persons in various camps will be issued with face masks while clean water will be provided through water bowsers,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Fred Matiang'i, Ministry of Interior & Coordination of National Government, said that they will begin evacuation of high-risk populations to safer grounds.

“Effective this morning, we have raised the alert level in the country in relation to the flooding situation and have given instructions to our security teams in North Eastern, Eastern and Coast regions to begin evacuation of high-risk populations to safer grounds,” he tweeted on Wednesday.
