United Kingdom’s death toll from coronavirus rises to 44,220
The United Kingdom has reported 22 new deaths from coronavirus pandemic in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s death toll from the virus to 44,220, the Department of Health and Social Care announced in a statement on Sunday.
As of 9am 5 July, 285,416 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the UK, an increase of 516 cases in the last 24 hours.
“There are more cases in the UK than are confirmed, for example where people are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms and do not get tested,” the department said.
There have been 10,505,758 tests (either processed or sent out) across all four pillars in the UK. Of these, 8,058,510 tests were processed in total.
In early May, the government set out another challenge to increase testing capacity to 200,000 tests per day by the end of May. This target was met on 29 May and continues to be met daily.
At 9am on 28 June, testing capacity was 294,258 in the UK.
